Balancing PLN and Public Discourse

Today, we can find all kinds of celebrities and professionals we like through social networks. Before the advent of social networks, the social aspects of ordinary people and celebrities were difficult to reach. We often feel distant from our idols, but the emergence of social platforms brings us closer to celebrities. Why do celebrities use social software?

The first point is that social platforms have better exposure. With the advent of social platforms, there has been a marked decline in traditional media followers. Celebrities need media exposure to achieve their business goals or maintain their reputation. At this time, social platforms are a good channel. The second point is that social platforms make it easier for celebrities to communicate with their followers. Human emotions need interaction, and celebrities can communicate with commenters in a timely manner on social platforms to reduce the deviation of information transmitted to the outside world. In addition, social platforms have lower costs and higher efficiency than traditional media. We all know that celebrities need to create their own personalities, and social platforms can publish the content they need to spread anytime, anywhere, and describe a more realistic personality with their followers.

But social platforms are a double-edged sword, and not everyone can profit from them. Diversity has always been a hallmark of social platforms, and negative opinions tend to get more attention. So this resulted in most of the participants reviewing the information with critical thinking. When many celebrities publish wrong remarks, people with ulterior motives often make big mistakes, and the gains outweigh the losses. Therefore, when publishing information on social platforms, we should strictly review the authenticity of the information sources, preferably with academic evidence. Quoting more of what has already been demonstrated reduces errors in speech.

Social Networking and Communication

Social media is gradually becoming a necessity for our study and life, and it keeps us immersed in it and unable to stop. We yearn to get closer and closer to it, to embrace it; at the same time, we fear the zero distance that social media brings. How to use the double-edged sword of social media has become a social issue before us that needs to be considered urgently.

In the process of dissemination of information, there is a private sphere and a public sphere. With the development of network technology, the private sphere and the public sphere gradually evolve from a relatively independent state and reflect the characteristics of interactivity and ambiguity. Take YouTube as an example. As a virtual community formed by offline users on an online platform, it is a platform for users to keep in touch, share information and conduct social interactions. In order to communicate and express themselves, people are accustomed to publishing their information publicly on their own video channels, and due to the great convenience and low cost of the forwarding function, the information between people has reached a high degree of sharing. But in some academic views, people cannot affirm each other. At this time, the video comment area will become discordant. But watching videos is a one-way way of spreading information. Even though it is possible to raise a different opinion in the comments section, the proof link complicates opponents. So while I was learning through YouTube, when I saw objections in the comment section, I myself began to doubt the authenticity of the video.

Therefore, when I study through the online platform, I try to keep myself in the principle of trust. Even if it conflicts with the information I know, I will check it later. As for how to communicate on social media, although everyone’s identity is virtualized on the Internet, I still think that self-cultivation is a necessary life topic for everyone. When communicating with others, I try to respect others and try to be objective when discussing academic topics. Seeking common ground while reserving differences is my communication skill.

Personal Learning Networks in Practice

For myself, I like to learn by myself on youtube and discuss with people who have the same interests on Reddit forums. Nowadays, it is not difficult for us to obtain knowledge independently from the Internet, even without spending money. However, the hard thing is how to cultivate the habit of self-learning.

First of all, it’s hard to learn by yourself. This difficulty is not because of the learning methods and tools, but because there are no exams and no one to test your grades. Second, self-study is a very boring and long journey. You spend a lot of time entering a new field and it’s hard to feel like you’ve improved. But in the process of learning, you will definitely encounter difficulties. At this time, you will doubt yourself and deny yourself.

So I think in building a self-learning network, having a plan and a goal is the most important thing. We need to have a long-term plan and a short-term plan. A long-term plan is set up to achieve your ultimate goal. After a long period of study, what level of learning status do you hope you can achieve? Therefore, in the long-term study plan, it is necessary to make a short-term plan. Short-term planning requires refining your tasks, and for me, I divide each week into a period. At the end of each week, I assess whether I have achieved the goals I set at the beginning of the week. Then I reward myself or punish myself based on how well the goal is achieved. The reward could be playing video games, spending money, and eating a big meal; the punishment could be spending more time studying, practicing calligraphy, and doing nasty sports. These mechanisms are simple but undeniably effective.

Personal Learning Network and Inclusion

Great changes have taken place in knowledge and learning in the Internet age, and people have to face the two major challenges of fragmentation and information overload. This requires not only a series of methods and strategies but also a new way of thinking. Inclusive thinking refers to the processing and transformation of some seemingly unrelated or even contradictory ideas, viewpoints, and theories to make them compatible, organically combined, and integrated. Through this new method, we can achieve the goal of integrating fragmented knowledge and information into a whole and reducing the storage space of the brain.

Inclusive thinking is a way of thinking about problems. It does not deny that people’s cognition is related to their position, but requires people to admit that it is understandable that there are different views due to different positions and perspectives. But the result of inclusive thinking is positional and individualized, and its goal is to construct individualized systems of thought and knowledge. Everyone’s conclusions through inclusive thinking are not completely consistent, and everyone’s cognition of things is still closely related to his original cognitive structure, position, attitude, and values. It is advocated that everyone thinks in one direction at the same time; in order to reduce the one-sidedness of thinking, it is also required that everyone changes different thinking angles and directions at the same time, which not only avoids ideological conflicts but also allows all-round thinking about a certain thing, point of view, theory, etc.
