Engaging The Personalized Learning Network

In my opinion, any information that appears on the web has the potential to change your destiny. Every Twitter message, photo update, reflects your personality, abilities and priorities. I have also talked to some corporate employers or teachers of related professions, and in their opinion building a good online personal image can add to their first impression. So I will continue to run my PLN in my future study or work environment.

How to create a unique PLN or attractive social media account?

First, I would start by sorting out your capabilities and resources and removing all unprofessional content from your social media feeds. If you want to spice up your resume through personal social media, the content promulgated on social media should be relevant to your profession. I was once told by HR, “If you don’t think this photo is appropriate for the front page of the New York Times, it should also basically not be in any online space.”, I think that’s a very good criterion to review the content I want to upload.

The second point is to determine the core of our unique content. In this era of information explosion, exemplary seems to be the easiest thing to do. But the cultural heritage is the means by which we ourselves stand out from the competition. So we must persist in learning and constantly increase our own cultural heritage. When the content we post reflects our own value or predicts where things are going in real life, our followers flock to us.

Finally, it’s easier than ever to share our stories in social media. It’s our job to consistently increase our personal credibility and visibility. Let’s build our personal brand image in an active state and make sure our brand content includes good ideas we have for aspiring companies and brands.

Why Media Literacy Matters in Our PLN ?

The concept of media literacy was first proposed by British scholars, initially to counter the impact of popular culture on traditional education caused by the popularity of movies. Media literacy refers to people’s ability to select, comprehend, question, evaluate, thoughtfully adapt, and create and produce media messages in the face of various messages from the media.

From the beginning, media literacy was proposed with the core of cultivating the public’s ability to reflect on and resist the negative effects of mass media; in the Internet era, various types of emerging media have emerged, media empowerment and audience subjectivity have come to the fore, which also makes public media literacy enhancement an important issue.

Taking online public opinion as an example, driven by selective psychology, technological preferences, and algorithmic recommendations, individuals tend to choose only information that meets their interests or is consistent with their own views, which leads to the limitation of the public cognitive horizon and the lack of dialogue among different subjects in public opinion events. Further, in a pluralistic value system society, each group has its own perspective and interests, and if we only stick to our own perspective to perceive and judge public opinion events and lose the ability to receive and perceive diversified information, it will easily lead to the polarization of public opinion groups, compression of rational, open and inclusive public space, and loss of the possibility to dialogue and reach consensus with other subjects, and the online public opinion field will become more and more torn. The Internet opinion field becomes more and more torn.

If people want to improve media literacy in terms of its connotation, one is to develop the ability to use media, and the other is to accept media messages critically. Firstly, we should use new media technologies and applications reasonably, legally and with restraint; secondly, we should have the ability to sift through the vast amount of information and the ability to recognize, analyze and criticize information, and consciously resist negative content; then we should carefully choose who to communicate with, maintain our own PLN and respect the rights of others; in addition, we should use the online public sphere to participate in public affairs discussions and rationally express our own opinions.

PLN and Education

If I were to recommend a social platform for education, I would definitely recommend TED.

TED is a non-profit organization founded to spread unique ideas to change attitudes and, in turn, change the world. TED specializes in inviting innovators and practitioners who are at the forefront of various fields to give talks of 18 minutes or less. I basically keep the habit of watching one TED episode a day, at first as a hobby. But it really opened my eyes, let me meet the best people from all walks of life, let me understand the latest technology, and let me know that there are so many interesting people in the world doing so many fun and meaningful things.

What values does TED convey? When I was a kid, I used to lie on the floor and look up at the stars and wonder why the world was the way it was,” says Chris Anderson. As far as I know, there is no other venue for such exploration than the TED conference. Here you can ask all kinds of questions, from all kinds of perspectives. I found that just as I was getting caught up in the business game, there were amazing innovations in many fields, from astronomy to psychology, to evolutionary psychology, to anthropology, to other fields, and you could see that everything was changing, and it was really exciting to see the changes. And the most exciting thing is that it’s all interconnected. They’re connected and intertwined. Just in the last few days, we’ve heard people here talking about things they care about, things they’re passionate about, and how they can use them to change the world. The desire to bring such a group of people together is because the group shares certain ideals, and the conference was able to raise some funds and good solutions to problems. I believe that all of this together can certainly help change the world over time.”

I learned a lot from TED, one is that I can understand the world from a different perspective, expand my horizons, and grow in insight. It is a very good educational platform
